Okay, here’s another addition to a still ongoing obsession with one of South Korea’s biggest groups – GD & TOP (members of boy group Big Bang). A while back they released their official music video for their song “Knock Out.” What most don’t know is that the track was produced by DIPLO. Yes, DIPLO. And the song is easy to discern compared to the rest of their album (example: “Oh Yeah!“). But his eclectic and creative beats still work with the duo’s vibe and eccentric fashion.
Also, just to get most people in the know. “Hip-hop” in South Korea is pretty new. It’s seen more as “style” rather than having the cultural roots it’s evolved from in the United States. But this isn’t to say that the artists there can’t flow. As heard and seen in this song, the two can definitely flow with the melody of the song.
Unfortunately, the song was also banned in the country for its “suggestive” lyrics which was stated to be bad for their “psyche.” I don’t know what it is about the lyrics that has gotten the country in an uproar. They’re pretty tame. And it’s too bad because these two are really one of the first groups to really try and push hip-hop in South Korea. I’ve even seen TOP “C-walk” in a live performance for this song. That was pretty odd imo. But I’m sure within the next few years we’ll see the genre evolve over there. But that may also have to involve the culture growing.
