MGMT Stream of Congratulations on NPR

There’s been a lot of hoopla over MGMT’s follow-up to their mega-hit Oracular Spectacular.  After the leak of “Flash Delirium” opinions borderlined on “genius new direction” to “absolute shit.”  In my opinion the track was rather weak and has been done by numerous elephant6 bands of the past (Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples In Stereo, etc) and even The Unicorns and their predecessors Islands. But due to their fame from singles “Time To Pretend,” “Kids” and “Electric Feel” the noob “fans” found the song to be something “interesting.”

But true enough, I admit that my “hater” personality was slightly buffered having listened to their new album Congratulations on NPR..  Even though I still feel that the album isn’t a “breakthrough” or “genius” album – it may have been smarter for the duo to explore their psychedelic addiction rather than trying to spur out pop hit after pop hit.  Having been produced by Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 really brought out their song writing abilities.  It’s a deeper listen for those obsessed with their previous singles, but in the long run may be an album that an older more mature audience may sink into during their Sundays.  Critics may actually raise a brow as well.

Listen to the album on NPR.
