EMMY THE GREAT "Paper Trails" MP3 + "Gabriel" MUSIC VIDEO

Emmy The Great

Randomly browsing YouTube while at work should never lead to being penalized. And in doing so I ran into this great music video by Emmy The Great. The Hong Kong born now London residing singer songwriter has a sweet tune to her voice. The anti-folk like stylings of Emmy are almost twee pop like and the music video for “Gabriel” goes along with that vibe. Like the a Wes Anderson film, the music video plays out with its assortment of quirky and off beat moments. It’s colorful and fun.

BEOWULF (2007)

BEOWULF

I can honestly tell you that I didn’t do too much research before I sought out to see Beowulf. But I was quite excited. I love period epics and mythology or fantasy coming to life…or the big screen that is. I must have been one of the few who did not come to see Angelina Jolie’s bare skin displayed on the big screen. But other than her skin being shown in “3D” I was in for another surprise…

What was the surprise you ask? The film was done with motion capture video. I did not know that this film was animated. The trailer I saw a few months ago lead me to believe that this was a live action film. Yes, the trailer then actually looked that good. But then again it was only a few minutes. I guess this solves the mystery as to why the commercials looked like the characters were photoshopped.

If you are unaware along with possibly 70% of the audience Beowulf was an old English poem written around the 8th century. Though a fictionalized tale, the story revolves around Anglo-Saxon history and Norse mythology. If J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of The Rings is a bi-part a large influence on the majority of today’s fantasy epics and tales, Beowulf was an influence on Tolkein’s Lord Of The Rings.

Here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia describing the tale “In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists: Grendel, who is attacking the Danish mead hall called Heorot and its inhabitants; Grendel’s mother; and, later in life after returning to Geatland (modern southern Sweden) and becoming a king, an unnamed dragon.”

Now with the surprise sinking in 10 minutes into the movie, I still couldn’t swallow as to how the story was being presented. Though the technology displays how much technology has developed in the past few years, the story of Beowulf was something that they couldn’t capture through animation even if they did capture motion to increase the realism of the movie.

The movie felt ironically “flat” to me.  The dialogue was high schoolish at best.  People were bewildered by its PG13 rating because of the sexuality and violence.  But on the other hand this movie’s script definitely felt PG13.  The wrenching evil that cursed man is only an underlying theme that was blanketed by eye candy and “ferocious” dialogue.

WAKEY! WAKEY! "Say It Ain't So" (Weezer Cover) MP3

Wakey! Wakey!

Mike Grubs aka WAKEY! WAKEY! will finally release his debut full-length Silent As A Movie December 12. But knowing what it takes to penetrate the blogsphere there is usually something bloggers love to post. What’s that you ask? Covers of course! Bloggers love posting something “different” or “exclusive” and usually they end up posting covers.

So in an effort to claim some of that sphere, WAKEY! WAKEY! has been releasing a cover song a week 10 weeks leading into the release of his debut. But this time he gave CMJ an exclusive. I’ve never heard too many covers of this song and I highly doubt I’ll ever find a cover that can top the original unless they’ve taken the effort to rearrange the song into some club thumpin’ electro tune. But what Mike Grubs did with Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” isn’t so bad.  Instead of the gut wrenching guitars he has dark and minimalist piano.  He has his slow tuned moody vocals that nicely lays over the piano.  Now though the dark vibe of the song can be transposed as heartfelt emotion, it just doesn’t seem to capture the beauty of the original.  River Cumos may have lost his touch for writing emotionally drenched pop songs, but “Say It Ain’t So” is a classic.
