Numerous “indie pop” veined artists; or now similarly titled “surf pop” bands from Brooklyn, New York have been getting tons of accolades. Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls, The Drums, etc. all have been receiving praises from the most elitist of hipsters to the young spawning twelve year old hipsters. But one band seems to have been missed by the radar. Long-time indie pop staples My Teenage Stride have been making the same brand of pop as the current batch of hyped artists. Lead by Jed Smith, they’ve written one of the most legendary songs in indie pop with “To Live and Die In The Airport Lounge.” And with a slew of songs they’ve garnered a solid niche fan-base.
Over the summer Jed has been writing songs for a future album. Recently WFMU has posted five free tracks from some of Jed’s recordings. One of the tracks “Money Problem” (which seems to reflect my current status) is a jarring single noted jangle affair. The lyrics contain the wit that Jed’s known for and the simple hooks and melodies that My Teenage Stride are known for. If the writing and recording process continue like this, My Teenage Stride may have a chance on hopping the end of the current wave of love for “indie pop.”
