CHROMEO Momma's Boy MUSIC VIDEO

CHROMEO

Sounding like a poppy Genesis, the retro New York & Montreal duo Chromeo’s next 80s tune to get some spotlight is “Momma’s Boy.”  Unlike their more reved up footronic songs from Fancy Footwork, Momma’s Boy pokes at you the way 80s comedy does.

Premiered on FN MTV, the video may be one of the real throw backs to what MTV claims to be a return to bringing us the newest and fresh music out there.

THE GOLDEN FILTER "Solid" Gold MP3

The Golden Filter

I found this mysterious electro synth band from New York from one of my favorite blogs Disco Dust.

With only a MySpace and a geographic location to be found, can we ask ourselves if this outfit or possibly even one person act have a deep secret? But this dance beat-a-thon reckons and wrecks hard floors with sultry electro beats ala Ladytron and Annie.

If The Golden Filter lets loose of any more songs like this, New York just may have unearthed another piece of musical gold.

THE WALKMEN "In The New Year" MP3

The Walkmen

Not much has changed since Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone. Hamilton Leithause’s croon is just as raspy as every and the guitars jangle more than ever while the percussion is still hit hard. But that’s not to say that there won’t be anything special about their new album You & Me.

MY DRIVE THRU Music Video w PHARRELL, SANTOGOLD & JULIAN CASABLANCAS

Not too long ago the trio made up of Pharrell, Santogold and Julian Casablancas got together to create “fresh” new sound to sell them retro hipster shoe staples, Chuck Taylors. Well, the full video has been released and it just as fresh as the idea to create the jingle. With Pharrell singing like Prince, Casablancas pouring out his usual melancholy croon and Santogold using her hip M.I.A.esque vocal pounce, the track itself is just as fresh as the new music coming out of today’s hipster scene. This collaboration in itself was quite fresh and hopefully leads to even fresher future endeavors.

COCOANUT GROOVE Midsummer Dreaming MP3

COCOANUT GROOVE

There will never be enough music coming from Sweden. And from the desolate middle region of Sweden, Umeå, Västerbottens län; Olov Antonsson is Cocoanut Groove.

Olov Antonsson just like contemporaries Jens Lekman and Pelle Carlberg writes bitter sweet melancholic pop. The kind music that make clinch tightly to your shirt around your heart area.

But before his debut full-length Madeleine Street is released, he posted a MySpace exclusive “Midsummer Dreaming.” His MySpace also states that he plays bass, piano, harpsichord, vocals, organ, guitars, percussion, trumpet, harmonica, etc. All of these instruments quietly perform on this dreamy summer song. The song hauntingly recall dreamy song writers of past such as Donovan and Scott Walker while bringing in dashes of Belle and Sebastian. This song is a great teaser to his upcoming full-length debut.

Cocoanut Groove may one of this year’s under the radar surprises.

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS S.O.S. (Rihanna Cover) MP3

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS

The UK rock n’ roll heart-throbs were on the on Jo Whiley, BBC Radio 1 not too long ago to perform some tracks from their debut full-length The Age of The Understatement.  With these special performances and recordings some artists may treat their listeners to a treat.  And a treat did we receive.

The duo performed a cover of Rihanna’s hit “S.O.S.”  Still in their early 20s,  they both know “what’s up.”

Cover songs are truly great when the band is able to transform the original into something that sounds just like their own.
